Yarn bomb bonanza

Some time ago I knew it as ‘craftitti’ but the evolution is now for softening up the urban landscape with a good old ‘ yarn bomb’ The world is getting wooly for June 11th– Dressing to the nines our local trees, lamp posts and bikestands for yarn bombing day.

Be inspired with your needles or your hooks to take the inside out into the wide world. Get more creative and push the limits cause you only need a little to catch a passerby’s eye.

Jam packed

What a whirlwind couple of weekends!!
Exactly 17 days ago the shoe dropped and it has been like one of those crazy visits to the family back home where you try to see everyone in your addy book… On the 20th of April my little star turned 11. We had a funny little trottior style apple cake with Nowak, Sara and Mateusz.
Then it was good friday. I hosted a few kids for cookie decorating. We picnicked in the Parc with Dahlia and Keith.
I went to geek out on my birthday, yipee. The kids got their Easter eggs blessed. Uncertain why this is so important but they do it every year.
We went to Easter brunch at Magda and Jean’s but we were surprised cause there were birthday cakes too.

On Saturday the 30th Szan went to some kind of figure skating demo with Magda, we thus had the school chums event at Latelier on Mayday. However Griphon and I enjoyed the postponed to April 30th Egg hunt at clark park. thanks to Marie Sterlin and her crew.

May first – oh such a perfect day
The girls were magnificent. Sweet, fun and enjoyed themselves both while crafting and at the ‘after party’

I hope to spend many more Sunday afternoons in Magali’s treasure trove of a shop. viva l’Atelier

Freed

There are a few things I have learned over the past few years. One of those things is that there is a true elegance in freed fibres. I trust the bits I have made – sitting in ziplocks against mothes waiting to aggregate with another little attempts. This is how the first exhibited piece of crochet came into being.

This how the wiggle hats came up.
This is how the craftitti, or ‘yarn bombing’ came up.
This is how this scrumble shawl, like so many bricolage projects came up

Ferment

Just before new years a good friend and I were chatting about my on-going, and snail-paced project on creative process Hooked in. Now that the first jot is ‘out’ into the world I keep thinking there will be more flow associated with the following chapters…. It is a bumpy ride.

She follows feng shui and says that this period of the year is for incubation, these basterd cold moments. We can cocoon our ideas together and make them grow as the earth does. I hope she is right cause there seems to be too many to get out now, I can’t seem to make them. I heard a podcast where the guy was saying that some artist had a little team of minions to get his out there. That is what I need it would seem.

Dreams filled with stitches

I dream of infinite stitches, each one to change the world, spinning it on it’s heal into a softer, tighter, warmer place.

Can I hook you into my vision¿

Incongruous

Yeah!!!! Geek out goodness!

Love to just have the unexpected occassion to hang out, and crochet, and then, there I was teaching it.
I thought I would just stop in, play a game of scrabble or something. Got to burritoville a wee bit low energy after a nearly full afternoon of child wrangling. Sat down to a full table of people cutting out lino stamps . Off they set to print their great works in ink, I thought…’i’ll head up stairs after my taco, maybe make a print…’ but before I could, oh glee, table of three set to seeing what crochet was all about.

It was most encouraging and inspiring and incongruous

Incongruous?
Not just unexpected; but in fact following a kind of governance of ebb and flow.
I am that geek, sitting in the corner holding back from asking,’come on, check it out, this is fun, you’ll love it. ‘
Okay, often Bouncing out of my chair

Here I was and I really hadn’t even planned to demo

It all just happened.
Sit back, the stitches will get you.

Process and time

Happy 2011 everyone!!!

I want to start by saying that everything is new again, even the kitchen sink, or more precisely the hot water tank to my building. Out with the old!!!!

And then there is the art and process discourse that haunts me at every turn from arts’ birthday to my new favorite theorist Daniel H Pink and his right-brained theories. Yes yes YES could we all – every one of us be more innovative, creative, and just generally better everyday.

I am working out some analogies, about referent, about beauty, about where we want to go with creativity, and where we are being led into believing we are being creative, when sometimes the most analytical decision we make in a day is what we wear. I listened to Steven Millhauser’s short fiction, about a man whose art and craft takes him away from anything that his audience could see and demands the question- one very dear to my heart- of the work for the work’s sake or   work for the communities sake?

Well, if you are out there I wish you all more of what makes your world spin, a can of paint, a piece of fibre, a new texture or taste

Free is to create, and to create is to share- Happy birthday art!!
